WernerFootbraces.jpgThese are the best adjustable kayak foot braces you can get. All the moving parts are metal—no plastic springs to bend or wear out. They are open at the bottom so that sand will drop out and prevent jamming, and with a little bit of practice you will be able to adjust them with your feet while still sitting in the boat.

There are two models available. The solid model is classified as "whitewater" by the manufacturer, but is actually suitable for any kayak that doesn't have a rudder (they are also frequently fitted to open canoes for whitewater). It makes a great upgrade from the junky plastic footbrace that comes in many kayaks. The rudder model comes with sliding channels and is intended for kayaks with rudders. These are standard equipment on many of the better boats out there, such as those from Current Designs.

To answer the obvious question, yes, these were invented by Yakima (the same Yakima that makes roof racks). Many years ago, they sold the design to its current owner, Werner Paddles.
