Wednesday, October 12th, 2005. Icelandic Kayak Odyssey.
I have received a newsletter from Sean Morley. He has on hold his plans to go to South Georgia. Instead he has turned his attention to a solo circumnavigation of Iceland by sea kayak.
Whilst the estimated distance is much less at around 1500 miles, the conditions he is likely to face as he paddles around the island could be very extreme. Sean says that the expedition named Icelandic Kayak Odyssey will about much more than achieving a world first record. The greatest challenge will be the south coast beaches where huge dumping surf pounds the black volcanic sand incessantly. He will need all the skill and experience he gained from his journey around the British Isles to complete this expedition.
Iceland was first circumnavigated by sea kayak in 1977 by Nigel Foster and Geoff Hunter, but nobody has managed to complete the circumnavigation alone. In 2003 the Scotsman Jonathan Burleigh came close to closing the circle but was forced to stop 150 mile short due to strong head winds and huge surf. Sean adds that the difficulty presented by a solo expedition is simply that of logistics - of carrying all the necessary kit in just one 18 feet kayak and getting that heavily laden kayak safely ashore at the end of each day. But at the same time a solo expedition provides a unique experience, similar to that of a lone yachtsman in that the success or failure of the project is dependent upon your own decisions, your own determination and will power. I enjoy the freedom of being out on the ocean alone in my kayak, just me and the elements, where what you do each day is determined by wind and tide and the strength in your arms.
Sean will begin his next adventure in May 2006, He is now planning and writing a book about his journey around the British Isles. He is seeking sponsorship and asks that anyone interested in becoming involved in the project contact him through his website.
Sean has raised over £10,000 for the Rnli and Marine Conservation Society as a result of his 2004 expedition. He believes he can top that next year and if you would like him to raise money for your charity then please get in touch soon.
