Thursday, June 23rd, 2005. Ray.

Ray Charles' keyboard.jpgTonight I continued to watch Ray, the Taylor Hackford’s screen biography of Ray Charles. I always enjoyed both but I paused the dvd player to write how compelling is the performance given by Jamie Foxx.
As Ray Charles, the actor morphs into his character not merely achieving physical resemblance and rendering perfect mannerisms but speaking with the same voice and setting the keyboard ablaze in an act of portrayal just short of resurrection.
The songs are presented in all their intricate, soulful glory and I was blown away by hearing them. They never sounded better.
And with the moving performance comes the character’s understanding. As Ray Charles fuses gospel with rhythm and blues as a result of his love with a preacher’s daughter whom he marries, played by Kerry Washington, a sexual encounter inspires him to compose spontaneously “I Got A Woman” on the reverend’s piano. Marriage and family doesn’t stop Charles from having other relationships with choir women while on the road. In a scene, where one of such affairs reveals her pregnancy and her will to give birth, pleading Charles to leave his family; his stern refusal and an offer to pay the bill of her abortion is answered by threats that just dissolve when the quarrel is interrupted by him encouraging her to sing, keeping up her anger, “Hit The Road Jack.”
The woman helpless before his musical genius, stumbles beautifully through the lyrics, staring in despair at him and crying. Then you understand.

Hit the Road Jack

(Hit the road Jack and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.)
(Hit the road Jack and don’t you come back no more.)
What you say?
(Hit the road Jack and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.)
(Hit the road Jack and don’t you come back no more.)

Woah Woman, oh woman, don’t treat me so mean,
You’re the meanest old woman that I’ve ever seen.
I guess if you said so
I’d have to pack my things and go. (That’s right)

Now baby, listen baby, don’t ya treat me this-a way
Cause I’ll be back on my feet some day.
(Don’t care if you do ‘cause it’s understood)
(you ain’t got no money you just ain’t no good.)
Well, I guess if you say so
I’d have to pack my things and go. (That’s right)

Well
(don’t you come back no more.)
Uh, what you say?
(don’t you come back no more.)
I didn’t understand you
(don’t you come back no more.)
You can’t mean that
(don’t you come back no more.)
Oh, now baby, please
(don’t you come back no more.)
What you tryin’ to do to me?
(don’t you come back no more.)
Oh, don’t treat me like that
(don’t you come back no more.)
