Thursday, July 14th, 2005. Tsunami documentary.

Cbc News. The fifth state specials..jpgThe Canadian television network, the Cbc, a public broadcaster like the Bbc, is putting together a documentary on the untold stories and unseen pictures from the Indian Ocean tsunami.
Albert Lee, a fellow kayaker and a Cbc researcher for the fifth estate specials contacted me yesterday.
Albert is looking for any contact information on any other kayakers who may have had their own tsunami-related experience and would be interested in speaking with the Cbc. He would much appreciate any help you can provide.
I replied Albert inmediately and placed a post in Paddling.net. Here is my answer to Albert:

“Hello Albert,

Regretfully, I have not any contact information regarding Tyler Leinweber. I collected the information from a press article published by the Penticton Herald. It looked to me as written from a press release as well.
I know of another good story written by Mary Lane Gallagher from the Bellingham Herald. Her article tells of Bob Kandiko, a teacher of developmentally disabled young adults for the Bellingham School District’s Community Transitions Program, who was paddling in Tarutao National Park with his wife and niece and recognized the fast-receding tide as a sign of an impending tsunami. They all paddled out to sea to avoid the tsunami before it would break.
On the other hand, the April 2005 issue of Sea Kayaker Magazine published the story of Karen and Ryan Kurytnik, present in Koa Adang (Thailand) when the tsunami hit. They swam the big swell.
For the purpose of your research, I would be glad to post a comment regarding Cbc’s project on the two best known paddling boards, asking for news and contact information on any kayaker involved. That and contacting Sea Kayaker Magazine should render useful info.
I would be glad to know on any news on the documentary so I could publish it on my site. Any other paddling information that Cbc might air would be welcome as well. I must feed the beast daily.
Paddle on!

Ignacio Wenley Palacios.”
