Thursday, December 21st, 2006. Eilean Sgitheanach.
Tonight, I had the chance to speak on the phone with Gordon and Morag Brown. Since my training week in June 2006, Gordon has acquired as well, a Nordkapp Rm. Now he is waiting for the celebrated and in Douglas’s own terms, delectable Nordkapp Lv.
He has been as kind as to allow me to rent one of his boats, which places a fair deal of confidence in me. Clearly, he does not expect his kayak to wash ashore empty, on the frozen wastelands of Greenland.
In spite, of his actively engaged schedule, I have booked two training days before the event. Then I shall pursue the skills, dexterity and attunement, required to progress in the Bcu ranks. At some indefinite time, years from now, with a little help from my friends, I honestly expect a light saber to be handed to me.
As for the 2007 Scottish Sea Kayak Symposium, the application forms are yet to be mailed in January 2007, but unofficially I am in.
The event will be held at the Gaelic College in Sleat, Isle of Skye from May, 25th to the 28th. Following the main event, there will be from May, 29th to June, 1st, guided trips lead by top sea paddlers.
The Symposium has arranged the presence of well known contributors, all of them accomplished sea paddlers, leading coaches, respected authors on kayaking, and expedition paddlers. They already include:
· Gordon Brown
· Doug Cooper
· Franco Ferrero
· Nigel Foster
· Howard Jeffs
· Mike McClure
· Kevin Mansell
· Andy Stamp
· Douglas Wilcox
· Brian Wilson
· Duncan Winning OBE
They will be joined by experts on the wildlife and culture of Skye, and yet mores coaches, lots of coaches. As Simon Willis noted on the 7th Symposium, out of the twenty-six Level Five sea coaches in the UK, only three were not present at the time.
