Friday, March 24th, 2006. Adriatic crossing halted.
The attempt undertook by Shane Braddock and Ray Fusco to cross a 300 kilometers stretch of the Adriatic Sea from Split (Croatia) to Pescara (Italy) was finally stopped on last Tuesday by the Croatian Police in full glory.
Last week, Braddock after finally convincing the very reluctant Croatian police officers to allow him and Ray Fusco to leave Split, set out to the islands of Vis, close to the Croatian mainland, and reached the tiny island of Palagruza.
Acting on security and anti-smuggling laws, the Croatian maritime police intercepted the kayakers shortly after they left the island of Palagruza, and demanded them to turn back on grounds of lacking a permission to leave Croatian waters, effectively denying them entry into Italian waters.
Bitterly disappointed, Braddock blamed the Croatian bureaucracy and the authoritarian habits indelibly fixed in the Croatian authorities. He has vowed to attempt the crossing again in a less public manner to escape police scrutiny, starting from Italy and heading towards Croatia.
Braddock, whose mother has Croatian roots and runs Life Jacket Adventures, a sea kayak outfit in Split, seems determined to wage war against the pugnacious Croatian police, a quite bellicose corps for European standards, that has a reputation for not suffering criticism, especially adverse, gladly. To his credit, he is an Australian. He has asked for a change in Croatian regulations to help the development of adventure tourism. I have to regress. Life in Croatia could well take now an adventurous, daring turn for Braddock.
Ray Fusco, a Beacon resident, is the Director of Programming for Hudson Valley Outfitters in Cold Spring, NY and the President of the Trade Association of Paddlesports.
