Saturday, March 4th, 2006. Near gale.

Merchant Krevne in the North Sea.jpgCumbrous breakers gathered and crashed on the works of the harbour’s stonewalls. Five of us left the quay as the rest of the group stayed inside the port’s waters. Fifty yards from the bulwark three turned tails and ran for shelter. Gabriel and I rode against the headwind riding through steep wind driven waves.
For a time, I swept up faces, punching at times through the waves’ roofs just before they close above me. The shape of the deck cleared the water flow over the sides of the hull as it rose and then plunged over the wave’s neck, disappearing beyond it into the following trough.
My friend halted half an hour later, wary of the coach’s warn of placing a radio call to the Maritime Guard if we would not return shortly. Sea conditions deteriorated as the wind continued to blow from the South. I edged and leaned between crests, turning my bow in two reverse sweep strokes.
Manes of spray already trailed from some crests. I started paddling as the first trough reached under my cockpit, shifting my weight forward. As the wave pushed the boat I quickened the stroke rate and shifted the weight back, shooting the kayak hull forward on the slope of the wave and settling into the crest. With the increased speed, I tilted the Seawolf to maintain the course down the wave.
Speeding down the face, a fast cadence of strokes avoided the stem to be slowed and then, broached by the trough as the stern is still pushed by the crest. Reputedly that is what the Seawolf is built for and certainly being fast, it allows too for carving precise turns in moving water.
A push for the skills. Rushing forward with unfamiliar speed down large waves, careening the boat to scoot over the smaller waves to gain the next steep face. To start all over again was one of the finest moments.
