Sunday, April 9th, 2006. Churchill Fellowships.
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust announced on last February, its fellowships for 2006.
Set up with public donations after the death of the former Prime Minister in 1965, the trust has given grants to thousands of men and women, from all walks of life and of all ages, who have thus been able to gain a better understanding of the lives and cultures of people overseas.
The trust aims to support those in pursuit of knowledge, who are unlikely to gain funding elsewhere, and formal education or professional qualifications are not necessarily required.
Fellows receive a grant, usually for a stay of four to eight weeks, covering living and travel expenses. On return, each submits a report on his or her project and is expected to disseminate any findings as widely as possible.
Once again, among the fellowships, two have been awarded in 2006 to kayak projects. The fellows are Mr Dan Jones, from Chester, 33, a senior lecturer outdoor studies, who will undertake a kayak and ski expedition to Greenland; and Mr Chris Smith, from Fallowfield, 23, a watersports coach. Smith will kayak the rivers of Madagascar.
