Tuesday, April 11th, 2006. Leo Hoare and Olly Sanders.

sea rescue practice.jpgI came across a review of Sea Kayak Safety, a 90 minute instructional Dvd where the rescues are shown from a number of different angles and demonstrated in realistic British conditions, that is foaming, thunderous seas. I like these mild euphemisms. The reviewer found the Dvd stimulating for the responsible sea farers.
The general approach is delightful: The coaches try politely to inform paddlers of a variety of techniques, getting across the safety message so that they can make their own minds depending upon the conditions. All in seas that would make a North Sea fishing pilot drop the helm, kneel and pray.
This goes on: Normal rescue techniques such as the X Rescue, Scoop, Re-entry and roll are slowly demonstrated, along with lesser known technique such as the Ladder and Baz’s Bomber. Actually, they seem to be basic techniques that the intermediate paddler should practice every day before breakfast.
The authors, Leo Hoare and Olly Sanders are both B.C.U. Level 5 coaches and instructors at Plas y Brenin. They run now Rock and Sea Adventures, a tour company located in the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales which offer excellent courses and tours in Anglesey, Sardinia and the Lofoten islands.
I am for their intermediate six day course, aimed at the competent sea kayaker -clearly me- who wants to learn that little bit more either in the North West coast of Scotland or the West coast of Ireland. That would be, hmm…, in conditons? It covers the somewhat advanced skills of tidal planning, navigation, seamanship, sea safety, rescues, chart work, and weather forecasting.
This is exciting. I shall order the Dvd. I am sure that if I get over my 3 star assessment, this Bcu people will teach me their secret handshake.
