Wednesday, May 17th, 2006. Brandon Nelson.
On April 4th, 2006, Brandon Nelson broke the world record for the longest distance paddled in a 24-hour period: 146 miles around a two-mile course on Washington’s Lake Whatcom.
The previous record was held by the South African kayaker Marinda Hartzenberg who paddled 137 miles on January 1st, 1991.
Brandon and Heather Nelson met in Lotus, California in 1998. They have been paddling together ever since. Their expedition comprise the Amazon, the Yukon, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Baja, Siberia, Gallapagos, the Virgin Islands, the Great Lakes, the Sierra Nevada. They are settled in Sudden Valley, Washington.
In 2003, they became the first American team to make a complete kayak circumnavigation of Lake Baikal, the Earth’s Largest Lake. In 2000 they followed up a 90-day, 3500-mile mountain bike ride from Canada to Mexico with a 72-day paddle of Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. They teamed up to take first place overall in the 316-mile Lake Michigan Challenge in 2002, and in 2005 they broke the mixed tandem record by over five hours in the 460-mile Yukon River Quest.
Both are regular contributors to Sea Kayaker Magazine, and various other publications.
Nelson originally set April 13th as the date for the record attempt, but on April 12th, he received word his mother, Janet Nelson, was dying, he said. He postponed the paddle to spend time with his mother in Phoenix. Nelson’s mother died the day after.
His boat is named CA-125, after the blood test capable of early detection of ovarian cancer.
