Saturday, December 1st, 2007. Tasman Sea.

James%20Castrission%20and%20Justin%20Jones%20paddling%20in%20the%20Tasman%20Sea.jpgJustin Jones and James Castrission from Sidney, who left Forster on November 13st, to reach Auckland by December 25th, have experienced strong ocean currents and persistent headwinds for 800 kilometres that will delay their estimated date of arrival.
Past through the halfway mark in the 2,200 kilometre crossing, the electric water desalination unit stopped functioning yesterday. Today Jones spent several hours manually pumping the reserve desalination machine to procure the daily 10 liters of fresh water needed to drink, cook and clean infected ulcers, a result of constant friction and exposure to salt water in a 15 hour daily paddle regimen.
The previous mechanical malfunction involved the rudder, where salt water had begun to affect the control cables, making very hard to steer and hold a bearing in the high swells of the Tasman Sea.
Headwinds are expected to persist until at least Wednesday, when a change is forecasted to bring westerly winds that will push their craft towards New Zealand.
The team keep a safety raft in the craft and their log, progress can be monitored in their website through the updates sent by a Panasonic Toughbook, powered by flexible solar panels.

I would hope that someone can improve upon the equipment or situation where "infected ulcers" are unavoidable.
