Wednesday, November 19th, 2008. Yachtman.

For the sake of navigation knowledge, and for the wanton whim to prove yachters how rugged we, paddlers, are, I am currently under training to seek certification both as a Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore. The Yachtmaster Offshore certification involves to a degree, a demonstration of skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of ship construction, ballasting, radio, radar, collision regulations, meteorology and signals. In a few weeks, I shall have an assessment for Coastal Skipper. Attaining qualifications for Yachtmaster Offshore will ask for continuing courses until June 2009.
I really thought that things like such would only happen in places like the West Indies, but further progress to the more demanding Ocean Yachtmaster would not only raise me as a namesake to my wristwatch, in Spain it would allow to wear with minor differences in rank insignia, the Navy dress uniform. This has already altered my intransigent approach to weddings and other ceremonial occasions altogether. Now I am all dreamy about the infinite chances to have among unsuspecting honour maids, would I appear dressed in a double-breasted, epauletted navy blue jacket, with rows of lace on the sleeves, matching trousers, white shirt and black shoes and tie, and a peaked cap. The very least I can do if attending a wedding dressed in full Navy uniform, is to strip myself down to shoes, hat and a regulation leather thong before jumping into the bride’s hot little hands.
These very substantial benefits of the Yachtmaster certification do not stop here: When in the Tropics, one is entitled to wear a white tunic with stand collar, matching trouser, and white cap and leather shoes. Regretfully, light khaki is not expected in Tropical service but in extremis, I could do without it.
Under such auspices, whatever inhibition could prevent me to do this, I should summon it.
