This story is heart breaking.
I came across this story because a few people (adults) just lost their lives kayaking and canoeing in swollen rivers here in Connecticut because of the recent hurricane Irene.
This sport has become too easy to engage here. It is inexpensive and often without proper guidance. Reading the laws triggered by Claire’s death has made me think real hard and carefully about my involvement with the community where I live. I write a column in a local newspaper WaterburyObserver.com called River Tales. In a few days my next column appears and talks of a near tragedy of 4 young adults who capsized in kayaks and a 46 year old father of 3 that died in a canoeing accident. I found three of the kayaks and over several days pieced together their story. This morning my editor sent me a link that it happened again while I was writing my story. I am desperately trying to prevent this from happening again. I know I can only do so much. But I am partly responsible (perhaps more than I care to admit) for bringing people to the Naugatuck River by my home.
I understand that the stories are different in details. However, there is a kayak/canoe shop with very little experience which seems to rent kayaks and canoes to any one without experience. You can purchase kayaks cheaply in most discount stores. The river I live by has seen a tremendous increase in activity. It offers old industrial debris and rocks waiting for an accident.
If you were to read this please consider giving me some advice. I do not want to meet the parents or children of someone that need not pass before their time.
My email address is nrrg_sh@yahoo.com or kznrrg@sbcglobal.net
With all my sincere sorrow, best wishes and blessings,
Kevin Zak

[Ignacio Wenley Palacios] comments on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011.
