Kayak Forum > marine radios
It is always a pleasure to offer help to a lady in trouble. My personal vhf radio is the Icom Ic-M88 Is. It is marine grade and completely waterproofed. I have Eskimo rolled with it in my Pfd pocket and had it submerged in water. Compact and durable, the Li-Ion battery allows for a very long battery life.
Even when wearing gloves, the backlit buttons are easy to operate and the Lcd screen is large and clear.
With 5 Watts of power the two-step power saver selections allows for 5 full Watts, 3 Watts or 1 Watt.
Although there are scores of functions that I never had yet learnt, operation is simple which a find an essential feature. The frequency control and the choice of optional features are indeed simple.
As it fits very well in the hand, I would choose it over the Icom Ic-M1V.
Regarding the Standard Horizon HX471S, I have never tried but it seems an excellent submersible 5 Watt marine vhf. It exceeds Icom Ic-M88 Is, in its capability of receiving AM, FM and aeronautical bands. On the other hand, I have not tested its quality and its 1300mA lithium-ion battery deliver 10 to 12 hours of operation off a single charge, while the Ic-M88 Is allows up to 24 hours of operation.
I suggest to open a thread on the issue in Paddling.net. You will probably find good information on the HX471S and retailers.
Regardless of your choice, your husband will smile expansively after opening the parcel.
Happy Christmas!
You might want to check out this link from George Gronseth of the Kayak Academy. He likes the Standard Horizon HX-350s. I don't think you can get one new anymore but you can check out ebay. That is where I got mine. Click on tips and then click on VHF Radios for kayaking.
Cheers,
Tom
