Pittarak claims: This elegantly crafted sea kayak is designed by the Australian expeditioner Larry Gray to provide a fast, responsive kayak for paddlers of all skill levels. Its high bow slices cleanly through rough seas while its low profile in the water provides excellent stability and control in a wide variety of sea conditions. The sides of the hull are designed to raise the keel out of the water during extreme edging or leaning. This allows the kayak to pivot on the spot in any direction with minimal paddle strokes. Uncompromised strength in construction provides long term durability and confidence in extreme conditions. Innovative deck and cockpit configuration provides comfort and functionality for the paddler on extended journeys.
The Pittarak is designed primarily as an exploratory expedition sea kayak. Its keel line is straight and defined so it does track very well, particularly into oncoming seas and winds. The Pittarak responds very well to leaning and tilting due to its plan shape combined with its balance point being at the hips. It is capable of turning within it’s own length by leaning hard onto the gunnel. This gunnel shape also provides an active planning surface that is utilised when performing broach landings on heavy surf beaches. The skeg option complements the Pittarak’s performance into head winds and seas by securely locking the rear of the kayak into a following sea, preventing broaching. It also provides the ability to trim the kayak in a beam sea by varying the depth of the skeg.
All hatches on the Pittarak are high quality Valley Canoe Products from England with one large oval hatch on the rear compartment, one round hatch for the day compartment and one round hatch for the front compartment.
The Pittarak range of sea kayaks have been around for many years, constantly being enhanced with each new model. Although designed and used primarily as an expedition sea kayak, the Pittarak also attracts the new paddler or those searching for a craft suitable for weekend journeys. Designer Larry Gray says. “The kayak has excellent ability in rough up-wind conditions. The current model has a new adjustable skeg that provides increased tracking down wind. whilst the important features that remain unchanged are the up-swept low volume bow and stern that are designed to maximise deck water dispersal, so that balance and control are maintained in extreme conditions.”
